Priesthood Information

YOU ARE NEEDED TO BE A LEADER OF THIS NEW RELIGIOUS MOVEMENT. IF YOU HAVE LEADERSHIP SKILLS, HERE IS AN OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

One of the administrative Canons of the Church addresses the Priesthood as follows:

There shall be priests and priestesses, women and men, who shall act as couriers of the message of the Church and organizers of Church activities. Priests and priestesses may marry or enter loving partnerships and have children. They may have secondary careers, but their primary vocational obligation is to the Church of Belief Science. (This is the principle of "Service.")

Priests of the Church essentially act as Assembly coordinators, but they also guide Assembly members in rituals associated with the Assembly. They minister to the members of the Assembly. Priests also have ceremonial obligations. Assemblies of the Church may be organized around existing religious philosophies, or they may be organized around new ideas, so long as the ideals of the Assembly are consistent with Canons of the Church of Belief Science. For example, Assemblies organized around the teachings of Christ may partake in rituals consistent with Christian history and philosophy. Assemblies organized around Buddhist, Jewish, Hindu, Islamic or other philosophies may partake in activities respectively associated with their religious philosophies.  A priest acting as an Assembly Coordinator will be responsible to lead Assembly members in rituals and ceremonial activities. Priests may be remunerated for their service at the behest of the Assembly members.

To become a priest or priestess of the Church, one must be voted as an Assembly Coordinator by a majority of members of an Assembly.  An Assembly of the Church is made up of at least five Church members. Once a person is elected as an Assembly Coordinator, he or she becomes a candidate for the priesthood. To become a priest or priestess, one must pass a thorough examination over Church philosophy and practices and demonstrate proficiency in directing ceremonies of the Church, especially the "Contextual Centering Process" exercise.  Exams will be written and in some cases oral.  Video or audio tapes of example ceremonial presentations may be required. Also, since the Church values education, ideally priests or priestesses will have, or will be in the process of attaining, a higher education.
